Short Lived: Lush Life

A recent rerun of "Tank Girl" (a movie I like) made me think of Lori Petty's self created Fox sitcom "Lush Life" which had a miserably short tenure in 1996. The plot revolved around Petty and her roommate (Kayrn Parsons from "Fresh Prince") and the whacky schemes they got into. I watched every episode of this show and that's all I remember sadly, my own wife who watched alongside has no memory of it whatsoever.

As much as I think Petty is a fun person to watch, the public seemed to disagree and Lush Life was sent out to pasture after four episodes. Fox is known for cancelling fantastic shows like "Arrested Development" but I think in this case, they just axed something resoundingly average...

You liked Tank Girl? I didn't care for it... and usually I like Casablanca references in stuff (heck, the whole plot of Tank Girl was Casablanca, just recast!)!

I just thought about this show today! (I have a VHS of three of the episode.) I was trying to find it on DVD...

"Lush Life" began a really odd trend. Around the same time it debuted, Fox started up a morning talk show called "Fox After Breakfast." Lori Petty appeared on "Fox After Breakfast" the same morning that Fox canceled "Lush Life" -- I seem to recall her joking that she didn't know why she showed up for the interview. Petty was the first of MANY guests whose shows were abruptly canceled after appearing on the talk show.

Both "Lush Life" and companion "Party Girl" were cheeseball shows, but they were fun. Certainly more entertaining than any reality show on the air today.
